Denver is warmer than you think, in more ways than one. On a typical day, temps top out at 45 degrees, and a high of 60 isn’t unusual. Meanwhile, the beer scene, alone, is hotter than July. So, don’t bypass the Mile-High City when considering your next winter escape. Put these four local-approved things on your list of Denver winter must-dos.
Sip Cocoa Apres-Skate
Take a whirl on the ice at Skyline Park’s Southwest Rink. Warm up with hot cocoa in the heated seating area while checking out a weekend concert. With a rental fee of $2, you don’t have to worry about packing your skates.
Get warmer: Need nighttime entertainment after a day on the ice? Head to Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret across the street for a sexy circus or burlesque show.
Ski a Suburban Mountain
You have to venture out of the city to hit the slopes, but the nearest mountains are only 67 miles away in Winter Park. Close to 30 feet of snow each year promises fresh powder whether you choose to bump your way down the moguls or take a leisurely trail through the trees.
Get warmer: Non-skiers can make their way downhill in comfort at the tube park or explore Denver’s “home mountain” on a heated Snowcat tour.
Rock Out at a Winter Concert
Outdoor concerts aren’t only a summer highlight. At the Red Rocks Amphitheater, Icelantic’s Winter on the Rocks extends concert season into winter. Splurge on VIP tickets to get access to a warming hut.
Get warmer: Can’t make the January concert date? Visit Red Rocks anyway. The red sandstone setting is magnificent even when you hear nothing but silence. Hiking trails wind past the monoliths and through meadows and valleys.
Toss Back a Cold One (or Two, or More)
Tired of eggnog? Head to the Winter Brew Fest, but pace yourself: There are more than 100 craft beers on tap. Fortunately, food vendors and live music give you something to do between rounds.
Get warmer: If you prefer grapes to hops and barley, Balistreri Vineyards offers tastings and tours of its downtown wine cellar. If sipping has left you noshy, stay for a winter-inspired lunch.
