How Lockwood Reinvents the Way Paris Drinks Coffee and Cocktails

Lockwood introduces an entirely new concept to Parisians. Opening in December 2013 by the Lehoux brothers, who are also responsible for fashion-favorite bar Le Silencio and hip Canal Saint-Martin cafe Ten Belles, this multi-hyphenate incorporates a coffee shop, aperitivo bar and an underground cocktail den.

With specially roasted coffee by Belleville Brûlerie, mornings at Lockwood have become immensely popular with local coffee fans, many of whom once lamented the demise of a quality espresso in Paris. Lockwood’s cool, relaxed space is home to pastries and a full brunch menu on Sundays, which includes eggs Benedict and stacks of pancakes with fresh fruit, doused in salted caramel.

Inspired by the Italian tradition, Lockwood’s coffee counter makes way for a bar after 6 p.m., with the brothers rolling out a spread of antipasti and a menu of Italian and French drinks. The Smoky Negroni with mezcal is essential, and is best enjoyed streetside.

A basement cocktail bar completes the Lockwood offering. A series of exposed stone vaults gives it a speakeasy vibe. And the drinks are some of the best in Paris. Make sure to try the rum-based Ruby Carol with fresh ginger juice, Peat Bastard with Islay whisky and lapsang souchong syrup and the Barrio de Pisco with apricot liqueur and Absinthe.

Marriott explored Paris’ Lockwood as part of a collaboration with VSCO’s photographers to create city guides for Paris; Berlin; Cairo; Taipei; and Portland, Ore.
