Steve Booker Samples London’s Food Truck Scene

Chefs like Roy Choi started transforming the dining scene in major cities in 2008 when his fleet of Kogi trucks started serving up addictive Korean BBQ in Los Angeles. The trend of making good food go mobile has now parked itself in London, where ventures like the KERB Market are celebrating the best of the city’s street food truck scene and luring foodies like lifestyle vlogger Steve Booker.

We asked Booker, a frequent traveler and London native, to check out Kerb’s King’s Cross market — just steps from the iconic St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel at the St. Pancras train station — filled with what organizers call “KERBanists,” or carefully chosen food vendors for their “inimitable food, style, attitude, energy and professionalism.”

The names of their trucks are just as punny as their U.S. counterparts: There’s Bean and Gone, Stakehaus, Fleisch Mob, and our favorites, Crabbieshack and Oh My Dog!

Ironically, Booker went with the Asian-influenced Kimchinary, ordering up one of its toasted Korean burritos filled with kimchi fried rice, cheddar, Gochujang special sauce, pickled coleslaw, spring onions, sour cream and slow braised bulgogi ox cheek, sesame grilled chicken or ssamjang winter greens.

“With Kimchinary I’m aiming to serve exciting, vibrant and slightly weird Korean-inspired burritos and tacos and get all of London hooked on kimchi,” says the truck’s Swedish chef Hanna Söderlund.

Choi would be proud.
