Weekends are special at Hugo’s, an authentic Mexican restaurant in the heart of Houston’s Montrose neighborhood. On Saturdays, diners can select a dish from Hugo’s a la carte brunch menu, like the over-the-top Huevos Rancheros made with crisp corn tortillas topped with refried beans, grilled hanger steak, fried eggs, salsa de tomate, herbs and cotija cheese.
On Sundays, indulge in a huge brunch buffet with regional Mexican dishes, desserts and creative cocktails like the Arma Letal, which combines prosecco, Gran Centenario Blanco, St Germaine, lemon, and guava simple syrup. Sunday’s brunch also features music by the house band, Viento.
Chef Chris Shepard sees Houston as “the most secretive and dynamic culinary destination in the country.” His restaurant, Underbelly, features food that tells the story of Houston’s culinary history with a variety of small and large plates. There are no appetizers or entrees here, just get a few plates to share and enjoy. Recently, Shepard was awarded the prestigious James Beard Foundation Award, winning the title of Best Chef in the Southwest, and is Houston’s first chef to achieve this.
Give Kolaches a Try
Locally owned donut shop Christy’s Donuts features donuts, breakfast sandwiches and a unique specialty – kolaches. Originating as a semi-sweet wedding dessert in Central Europe, kolaches at Christy’s include savory favorites like cheese, jalapeno and sausage nestled within sweet dough. The great thing about Christy’s Donuts is they stay open until 7 p.m. on weeknights and 3 p.m. on the weekends.
A Top Spot for Sushi
Kata Robata’s incredibly talented Executive Chef, Manabu “Hori” Horiuchi, honed his craft by studying at the famed Tsuji Culinary Institute and under famed sushi masters in Japan. The sushi menu at Kata Robata is a blend of traditional and modern tastes, making this restaurant one of Houston’s best spots for sushi.

From traditional gourmet chocolates to dipped cookies and even treats for dogs, this chocolate haven can’t be missed.
