French Pasta? Yes, It’s Real at the Maison Plisson Market in Paris

Ever-chic Maison Plisson on Boulevard Beaumarchais is an épicerie that brings together a fruit and vegetable market, wine cellar, grocery, bakery, butcher, delicatessen, cheesemonger and restaurant. It might sound like a lot to pack into one place, but Plisson is the brainchild of patrons Delphine Plisson, Delphine Jégou and Emmanuel Torras, who handpicked their range of 3,000 products by conducting a yearlong series of blind taste tests. Around here, only the finest will do.

The trio called upon a host of gastronomic experts – including chef legends Yves Camdeborde and Bruno Doucet – to advise them on the best way to get products that are usually hard to find in Paris. And it’s led to pretty special results: handcrafted French pasta, anyone? There’s traditional fare here, too. Croissants are baked to perfection, densely layered with rich, salted butter and are available all day – as is coffee from esteemed roaster L’Arbre à Café.

Opened in May 2015, the eatery supports locally sourced produce and has fully embraced unconventional opening hours. The shutters remain up from 8.30 a.m. to 9 p.m. for most of the week – no small feat in Paris

Plisson might even be thought of as a 21st century equivalent of the Marché des Enfants Rouges, the nearby historical market that dates back to 1615, which was so central to Marais life. Indeed, through supporting the local community – the store publishes a free guide to local spots – it might not just be a rightful heir, but something entirely new and delicious.

Marriott explored Paris’ Maison Plisson as part of a collaboration with VSCO’s photographers to create city guides for Paris; Berlin; Cairo; Taipei; and Portland, Ore.
