40 House Cocktails? A Guide to Drinking in Punta de Mita

Cocktails and vacations go hand in hand like sea and sand. From a sunset cocktail to a refreshing drink on the beach, it’s always good to have a wide range of options. Punta Mita — a nook within Punta de Mita — is a beautiful and luxurious part of the Riviera Nayarit and it attracts some of the best cocktail waiters.

Here they create exclusive cocktails with new infusions and combinations, inspired by the rich traditions and natural beauty. Mexico also has a variety of agave and sugarcane-based liquors that serve as a perfect base for cocktails, so if you still haven’t tried mezcal or raicilla, or even pox from Chiapas, why not try them in a cocktail while you’re in Mexico?

At the hotel W Punta de Mita they make cocktails as if it were a national sport and although the hotel is only two years old, it already has more than 40 exclusive cocktails and they are always creating more. The bar staff are encouraged to come up with new ideas inspired by the surroundings.

Their 751 184 is an alcohol-free cocktail named after the number of mosaic tiles used to make the incredible Camino de Huichol, a colorful celebration of Huichol symbolism that stretches from the hotel’s entrance to the beach.

Another favorite is called Magia Huichol and contains mezcal liquor and chilli with a flower syrup. It is not for the faint hearted. As well as the mezcal cocktails, some are made with the local liquor, raicilla, which is quickly becoming a trendy drink like mezcal.

If you would like to try your hand at mixing your own cocktails, you can go straight to the Mixology Butler on Marietas Beach at The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort. With their help you can mix your own cocktails with pre-prepared infused liquors. Some infusions are fruit-based — think mango, pineapple and guanabana — and some are more classic, such as vanilla and cinnamon.

There are also others, known as Las Mexicanas, which are scorpion, ant, hibiscus and jalapeno infusions, and for those of you with a sweet tooth there are bubble-gum and tiramisu infusions. Combine these with your favorite liquors and see what you can come up with.

If the Mixology Butler thinks your creation is particularly different to the cocktails on the menu, you can add it to the board by the bar and give it a unique name so that other guests can try your creation.

If you prefer your vacations to be more relaxing and you want a cocktail made for you, you can also crank the luxury up a notch with your own personal butler. Yes, there is such a thing at the St. Regis Punta Mita Resort! Tell them what your favorite flavors are and they can prepare a cocktail of your choice and serve it straight to you in your hammock on the beach.

The St. Regis cocktail menu is also in constant evolution, and their exclusive cocktail — a local version of the Bloody Mary, a cocktail first created at the St. Regis in New York in 1934 — is a huge favorite. There are also shisha cocktails, created with fruit, herbs and spices that are a great match with champagne; they are perfect for special occasions.

Whatever your tastes, before long you will be enjoying your vacation with a cocktail in hand and admiring the view.
