A humpback whale concert? Art-to-table experiences? You may never heard of these experiences before, but they are new tours offering unique ways for travelers to dive into the natural wonders and culture of Los Cabos.
This desert oasis has shed its outdated image of a spring break mecca in recent years and has reinvented itself with more grownup experiences. While basking on the beach in year-round sunshine is not a bad way to spend a day, there’s more to do on this stretch of the Baja Peninsula.
So forget the beach, and try these unique experiences in Los Cabos instead.
A Whale Concert
The Baja Peninsula is one of the best places in the world to see humpback whales during their migration from the frigid waters of the Arctic to the warmer waters surrounding Baja. From December to March, there is no better place to catch these massive grey whales while they look for a mate than Los Cabos.
For an unforgettable experience, don’t just watch the whales but listen to their music during a sunset whale concert on the high seas. Only males emit strong vocalizations, sometimes continuously for 24 hours, during mating season.
Humans can hear these love songs via a hydrophone that’s submerged into the sea while cruising aboard a Zodiac boat. The whale songs will then be amplified on the boat, so everyone can appreciate the music from the marine tenors.
Art-to-Table
In recent years, Los Cabos has captured headlines and appetites with its desert farm-to-table scene, with the 10-acre organic Flora Farms pioneering the movement. Now there’s something for both food and art lovers as well.
The Gallery District of historic San Jose del Cabo has been the epicenter of a growing art scene celebrating Mexican art and become the cultural cornerstone of Cabo in recent years. And now a new art-to-table tour lets you not only meet the artists and gallery owners of Los Cabos, but also share a meal with them.
A local artist and a chef will create a tasting menu together based on an artwork while creating a new piece of art that can be enjoyed—and eaten—together. Art-to-table tours can vary throughout the year, but one experience includes visiting the sculpture corridor in Puerto Los Cabos, filled with the works of famed surrealist artist Leonora Carrington, followed by a four-course tasting menu inspired by different paint strokes, a surrealist duet between a local artist and the chef at La Revolución restaurant.
Desert Dining
Dive into Los Cabos’ rustic roots as you explore the desert terrain and cuisine from the Baja peninsula. Experience the area’s ranching traditions as you dine in local homes on this desert-to-table tour.
Getting there is an adventure in itself, as you travel by Jeep 4 x 4 through the mountains, then switch to a cargo mule to arrive at the community of La Candelaria.
There you’ll be welcomed into the home of your local host, and over a rustic dinner your host will share more about their ancestors, traditions, and maybe even a few cooking secrets you can take home with you.
A traditional meal of Baja California Sur is the burrito de machaca de res with a side of beans, and queso de rancho. After dinner, enjoy a dessert of coyotas, arepas and chimango with piloncillo— and perhaps a little siesta in one of the hammocks in the garden.
