Beach Bums, Thrill-Seekers or Party People? Where to Honeymoon Based on Personality

There’s no denying it: A honeymoon is magical. You’re in the throes of just-married bliss, whisked away to an enchanted, beautiful, far-off place you’ve always dreamed about with your new life partner.

The first hurdle, though, is deciding where in the world you’ll land on your first vacation as newlyweds. The possibilities are endless, but a good place to start is mutual shared interests. Are you both into art and music? Love a thrilling adventure? Spend hours getting lost in a concrete jungle?

Wherever you end up, start by pinpointing the kind of getaway you’d both love; then narrow it down to a point on the map that feels right for both of you. Here are some suggestions based on what kind of couple you are and how you’d like to make your post-nuptial escape.

As always, check for travel restrictions and closures before planning your trip.

For Thrill-Seekers: Whistler, Canada

No matter when you visit this snowcapped corner of British Columbia, Whistler has something for couples who love a jolt of adrenaline in warm or cold weather.

Whistler shines bright in cold weather, with some of the best ski slopes in the world. Take a four-hour glacier hike, snuggle up on a dog sled or go snowmobiling once you’ve had enough of those ski boots.

In the summer, adventure can be found in the form of all-terrain vehicles, off-roading, Jeep tours, canoeing and e-bike tours around the incredible mountain landscape. Stay at The Westin Resort & Spa, Whistler, tucked away in the Coast Mountains, for gorgeous views and ski chalet vibes.

For Beach Bums: Kauai, Hawaii

Every Hawaiian island will have you spoiled for choice when it comes to sandy strands, but the romantic pull of Kauai, the “Garden Island,” is undeniable. Here you’ll find plenty of space to spread out and make eyes at each other, unlike what you’d find on crowded Waikiki.

Check in at the Koloa Landing Resort at Poipu, Autograph Collection for 25 acres of lush foliage on Kauai’s southern coastline. After catching some famous Hawaiian waves, book a couples massage at the spa and order room service from one of the the on-site restaurants for a private moment.

For Adventurous Eaters: Singapore

Fans of the film “Crazy Rich Asians” will know how important street food culture — also known as hawker culture — is to Singaporeans.

But gourmands won’t just want to spend hours slurping noodles and downing dumplings: Singapore is also home to 49 (!) Michelin-starred restaurants, including three restaurants flaunting the coveted three-star rating.

Settle in after your long journey at the plush, five-star Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel, smack-dab in the middle of the action of Orchard Road’s shopping and dining district. The iconic hotel is also close to an MRT metro station, so you can zoom off to any of the city’s highlights in a snap.

The ancient port city, now Israel’s most cosmopolitan address, is made for lovers who can’t get enough of the hustle and flow of city life. A bevy of museums, restaurants, nightlife options and historical monuments awaits couples who visit this storied city.

The vibe? Lively yet chill. Tel Aviv is known for friendly and welcoming locals, incredible continental cuisine and plenty of places to explore.

The Jaffa, a Luxury Collection Hotel now occupies the site of Tel Aviv’s former French hospital in the city’s historic center. Its serene accommodations and sweeping balcony vistas of the city will have you both soaking up the scenery and the Mediterranean sunshine together.

For Night Owls: San Juan, Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico knows how to party. It’s the birthplace of Latin music and dance legends like Ricky Martin, Luis Fonzi and the legend of salsa, Hector Lavoe. San Juan’s nightlife is hopping seven nights a week, especially on weekends, so it’s a perfect honeymoon spot for couples who love to laze by the pool by day and paint the town red at night.

Tuck yourselves away at the San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino and you won’t have to go far to dance the night away to some of the island’s best DJs and live music.

A quick cab ride will land lovebirds at legendary clubs like the artsy La Respuesta or at La Placita de Santurce for outdoor dancing and street parties under the stars of Old San Juan.

It may not be your first thought to visit Mexico City for endless art, music, and both modern and traditional culture, but trust. This city has it all and then some.

Book tickets at the stunning Palacio de Bellas Artes to see the Ballet Folklorico de Mexico, an unforgettable folk dance performance. And stay to explore the rest of the building, which showcases murals by Mexican artists like Diego Rivera and Jose Clemente Orozco.

Make a pilgrimage to the Frida Kahlo Blue House museum where you can take in the iconic painter’s work, as well as view her personal belongings that tell her incredible story.

Stay in style at the W Mexico City in the chic Polanco neighborhood where innovative dining and beautiful city parks filled with sculpture are plentiful.

For Nature Lovers: Bergen, Norway

The second-largest city in Norway is also known as the “Gateway to the Fjords,” and outdoorsy couples will go gaga for the sweeping vistas and unspoiled landscapes.

Located on the Scandinavian country’s southwestern coast and designated as a UNESCO World Heritage City, from Bergen you can board a number of expeditions to explore the fjords and the winding rivulets that connect them.

Cozy up at the sustainably designed, environmentally friendly Moxy Bergen, a modern gem in the midst of historic Bergen’s wooden homes. The hotel overlooks the sea, making it a prime spot to launch for a fjord adventure or a visit to the city’s cultural sites like the West Norway Museum of Decorative Arts or the home of classical composer Edvard Grieg.
