Written in the Stars: How to Plan Your Ideal Astrology-Inspired Vacation

You look to the stars to navigate dating, work drama and life decisions, so seek their infinite wisdom where it really counts: planning your next vacation.

To journey into the world of planets and stars, Marriott Bonvoy Traveler chatted with Lauren Ash, a professional astrologer for astrology app Sanctuary. According to Ash, you can look at your sun sign (the birth sign that’s been following you since, well, birth) to learn where and how to travel in alignment with your personal goals

For a full-picture view of where to travel, a professional astrocartography reading will lay your specific birth chart onto a world map. If a reading isn’t in your cards right now, Ash suggests you dip your toes into astrology-inspired travel by looking at the element your zodiac sign falls into. That element (fire, earth, water or air) can help you choose a destination, a time of year to visit and things to do that vibe with your sign.

Travel is often a team sport, so check the signs of your potential travel buddies when planning a group trip, too. Some elements tend to get along better than others — but don’t panic about incompatibility. Even if your element doesn’t align with another person’s, Ash says, “You can still use what you know about your elements to make it work,” reducing chances of friction and setting yourselves up to have a fun trip.

Trust the stars — and take the stress out of vacay planning and enjoying your time away with these astrology-inspired travel recs. And as always, check for travel guidelines and closures before planning your trip.

Fire Signs: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius

The fire signs — with bold, spontaneous Aries leading the pack — are the adventurers of the zodiac, according to Ash. Out in nature, you’ll find fire signs hitting hiking trails or parasailing to new heights. In the city, fire signs will be drawn to nightlife. Ash describes them as social butterflies, saying, “They can find the good spot, talk to the locals, catch the vibe of the place.”

Ash adds, “They really like to be doing stuff. They’re not a stay-on-location type of sign. They want excursions. They want photo ops.” Impulse-driven fire signs probably aren’t going to draw up detailed vacation itineraries, either. They’re more likely to fly by the seat of their pants.

Where Fire Signs Should Go: Seoul, South Korea

Stay At: Moxy Seoul, Myeongdong

“Fire signs will love the trendy and festive nightlife scene that a city like Seoul has to offer,” says Ash. “With plenty of food tourism, local history and rich cultural institutions, fire signs will never run out of exciting experiences to write home about!”

When to Go: Hot climates are a plus for fire signs, so they should opt for a summer or late-spring trip to feel the heat. But, since they like to go where life takes them, they’re less limited by weather than some other signs. “For fire signs, part of the thrill is the unknown,” Ash says. Unexpected rainy weather? Fire signs will have no problem donning a poncho and going about their daily adventures.

Packing Tip: Seoul’s fashion scene is legendary. So fire signs should pack bold, vibrant clothing for exploring the city and enjoying late nights out.

Favorite Perk: Fire signs like it hot, and there’s no better place for them to sweat than a sauna. (There are plenty of saunas and steam rooms to choose from within a few blocks of Moxy Seoul, Myeongdong.) For fire signs who want to mingle, Ash suggests they ask the hotel about any on-site events that might happen during their stay or do a quick search for nearby cocktail-mixing or cooking classes.

Signature Drink: A spicy bloody mary or a flirty virgin cosmo will ignite the fire sign’s taste buds.

Compatible Signs: Air signs (Gemini, Libra and Aquarius) fan the fire sign’s flames, boosting their curiosity and putting dreams of adventure into action.

Earth Signs: Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn

Grounded, structure-loving earth signs are expert vacation planners. Ash explains: “They’re the people who are comparing flight prices. They’re the people who are coordinating the group chat.” They know exactly how to assemble their dream trip, and they’re going to do just that.

Not drawn in by the vagaries of trending destinations, earth signs are more likely to enjoy places with tried-and-true accommodations, food and activities.

Connecting with nature can also be grounding for earth signs. It “can help them kind of let loose of all that mental stress and planning they have to do in their regular lives,” says Ash.

Where Earth Signs Should Go: Virginia Beach, Virginia

Stay At: Moxy Virginia Beach Oceanfront

“Take advantage of the outdoors by hiking on trails, enjoying peaceful strolls along the oceanfront and experiencing a sense of serenity that is hard to come by in the hustle and bustle of [daily life],” says Ash.

When to Go: Unlike fire signs, earth signs are all about prep, and they don’t want any surprises. According to Ash, they’ll opt for the high season to get the prime weather in a destination, even if it’s busier.

Packing Tip: Earth signs should fill those packing cubes with practical clothing that’s comfortable for whatever kind of outdoor activities recharge them.

Favorite Perk: Since earth signs have a more rigid, planned approach to taking time off from their daily routine, Ash recommends they look at their complementary element: water. On vacation, she explains, “It might be nice to do beachside yoga, something by the water, to kind of soften that tense, structured energy they have.”

Signature Drink: A classic, reliable old-fashioned or a refreshing Italian spritz mocktail with a nonalcoholic aperitivo and soda make air signs say “ahhhh.”

Compatible Signs: Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces) bring a nurturing, emotional balance to earth signs.

Water signs have earned the rep of being homebodies, but they’ll happily lean into vacation mode. Emotional and intuitive, these signs follow their hearts — and they’ll find much to love in a romantic city

Ash explains, “I think a real attraction for water signs is a city with a lot of live music, a lot of art and culture, a lot of shows.” In other words, “somewhere where [they] can be somewhere totally else but still feel connected to other people.”

For water signs, Ash recommends destinations with public spaces for reading or lounging by the water or places with cafés for people-watching. They’ll skip out on anything too thrill-seeking; instead, enjoying a stress-free, picture-perfect day is the water sign’s ideal vacation.

Where Water Signs Should Go: Warsaw, Poland

Stay At: Moxy Warsaw Praga

“This hotel is located a short walk away from the serene Vistula River,” says Ash, “where water signs can unwind and relax while enjoying beach reading, local cuisine and a peaceful environment in nature. The hotel is also in close proximity to the arts and culture scene, allowing them to enjoy the nightlife once they have had enough rest and relaxation.”

When to Go: Visiting in the summer lets water signs make the most of waterside activities and outdoor seating at cafés.

Packing Tip: Flowy, comfortable clothes are ideal options for water signs to explore the neighborhood or kick up their feet at the hotel.

Favorite Perk: “As stereotypical as it is,” says Ash, “the water signs do love the water.” They should choose a hotel location that’s close to a beach, lake or river.

Signature Drink: A refreshing mojito that evokes summer vibes — with or without the booze — is a water sign’s delight.

Compatible Signs: Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn) help ground sensitive water signs.

Air Signs: Gemini, Libra and Aquarius

According to Ash, air signs are sociable, curious and open-minded. When it comes to travel, they’re all about “going somewhere unexpected, finding the undiscovered gem and being the trendsetter who knew about a place before other people.”

They’ll put in the effort to prepare, too — even going so far as to learn a new language to better connect with the locals. “They want to do the work ahead of time so that they can experience [the culture] on a deeper level and not get treated like a tourist,” Ash explains.

Air signs thrive in dynamic urban environments where they can easily zip around and explore all a city offers. They’re also open to a more structured tour — self-guided or hosted by an expert — so they can see a lot all at once.

Where Air Signs Should Go: New York City

Stay At: Moxy NYC Lower East Side

“Air signs love to be where the action is,” says Ash, “and there’s no bigger melting pot of cultures and ideas than NYC. Fast-moving conversations and a buzzing social scene are sure to keep these signs on their toes. This is truly a city where anything can happen, and air signs will love hopping on the train to explore a city where the old meets the new.”

When to Go: Air signs are flexible, so they shouldn’t feel limited by season or climate.

Packing Tip: Air signs should choose versatile and stylish clothing for city adventures, and pack a small backpack or purse so they don’t have to make pit stops to grab essentials.

Favorite Perk: Air signs will be thrilled to grab a complimentary drink at hotel check-in before heading into the heart of the city to see the sights.

Signature Drink: Air signs should sip an espresso martini to keep the energy going or a sophisticated nonalcoholic Paloma.

Compatible Signs: Fire signs (Aries, Leo and Sagittarius) have no problem keeping up with air signs; they’re down to learn and do everything on a trip, just like their air sign friends.
